RECOGNIZING A NEED

HOW IS A VULNERABLE PERSON RECOGNIZED?

FACING LIFE'S UNCERTAINTIES

We change  as we age.  Here we examine some possibilities for identification of,  and resolution for those that require assistance.

Someone may feel quite alone and be aware that their capacity is diminishing.  This may cause many problems.

How are problems identified?  There are many "early warning" signals that will help.

Safety Issues:

  •   Is hoarding causing blocked exits?
  •   Are burners in the kitchen being left "on"?
  •   Are the meals nutritious and being eaten?
  •   Are  doors and windows being locked?
  •   Are bills being paid in a timely manner?
  •   Are driving restrictions being observed?
  •   Noticed new scrapes on the vehicle?
  •   Is there proper medication ingestion?
  •   Are other pets and plants being cared for?

A person may become vulnerable to intimidation from others' undue influence:

  • Loneliness allows unscrupulous strangers to enter lives by personal visits or telephone
  • "Granny Dumping" (moving someone out of their homes and abandonment)
  • Home repair schemes (travelers, unlicensed repair companies)
  • "I'll help you.  Sign this paper"
  • Ordering items over phone or through mail, including sweepstakes participation
  • Those who would exploit by demand

Relatives and friends may be distant or not aware of:

  •   Abuse
  •   Negligence
  •   Medication confusion
  •   Loneliness and solitude

THERE IS A POSSIBLE PROBLEM.  NOW WHAT?

Our staff will do a complete assessment, identifying current crises, immediate problems and managing for a safe and secure future.

In many of these instances, exploitation may occur, savings are drained, identities stolen, mortgages placed on homes once free and clear.  Medications are mismanaged.  Physicians are unaware of other physicians' involvement, with contraindications of prescriptions ordered.  Malnutrition and dehydration may occur.  How are risks be mitigated?

Many friends and/or family members may attempt to help; however, they may be ill-equipped to deal with a loved one with diminished capacity.  Managing someone else's life may involve many different areas:

  • Patient advocate, care management
  • Court/legal documents
  • Identity theft prevention
  • Real Estate transactions
  • Negotiating with creditors
  • Purchasing
  • Protection from those who would exploit
  • Home repair and upkeep
  • Accountant
  • Residential placement
  • Government programs
  • Family involvement
  • Daily living aids
  • Transportation
  • Inventory
